Spirulina in Diabetes
The food we eat consists of carbohydrates and sugar, which is
metabolized by the body to produce ‘Glucose’, the glucose level in blood is
maintained by Insulin hormone produced by the β –cells of pancreas which
further provides energy as and when required.
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease which is most prevalent health
problem worldwide. It decreases the ability of body to use energy found in
food. Patients suffering from higher blood sugar level may encounter symptoms
like:
·
poly urea (frequent urination)
·
polydipsia (feel thirsty)
·
polyphagia (hungry)
·
Blurred vision
·
Extreme tiredness
·
Slow healing of wounds
·
Weight loss
Causes of diabetes:
· One of the major causes of diabetes is
impaired production of glucose metabolizing enzymes i.e., decrease in production
of Hexokinase enzyme in liver and increase glucose-6-phosphatase activity.
· Inadequate production of Insulin from
damaged pancreatic cells.
· When body cells do not respond to
insulin.
· Improper diets are also responsible for
diabetic complications.
Treatment:
Spirulina in Diabetes |
Potent anti-oxidant property
of Spirulina prevents free radical induced cell- damage to beta cells of
pancreas, which helps in proper production of Insulin from pancreatic cells.
Diabetic patients have critical lipid profile. Spirulina has the ability
to decrease the blood lipid level by reducing the bad cholesterol LDL, which
prevents heart diseases and reduces the oxidative stress.
The calorie-cut diet regime of diabetic patients causes deficiency of
various nutrients. Adding Spirulina in diet provides complete nourishment and
act as immunomodulator too.
Therefore, Nutraculture Spirulina provides complete nourishment as well
as an efficacious treatment for diabetes by working on the root cause of
problem and providing all the nutrients whose deficiencies can increase the
risk of diabetes.

Spirulina in Diabetes Management
The food we consumed is converted to glucose by our body and this
glucose is utilized by the cells for the production of energy in various
metabolic reactions. Normally glucose is stored in the form of glycogen in
body’s cell. Body requires hormone ‘insulin’ produced by beta cells of pancreas
to help cells throughout the body for proper absorbance of
glucose from the bloodstream. Usually pancreas produce insulin in right
amount to utilize and assimilate the glucose but in diabetes, however, no or
very little insulin is produced (type 1 diabetes) or the cells are not
responding properly to the insulin (type 2 diabetes).
Therefore, Diabetes is a metabolic disorder which is considered by high
blood glucose level and ineffective insulin. Diet has a key role in maintaining the blood glucose levels of diabetic
patients to prevent arising complications. Spirulina an ideal food for diabetes patients because of its high content of protein, vitamins, minerals,
carbohydrates, fibres and essential fatty acids. It is known that chlorophyll
aids in absorbing minerals by our body and assist in cellular repair along with
various antioxidants, especially the pancreatic cells of type-2 diabetics.
Zinc has its role in promoting
the synthesis of natural insulin. Magnesium and GLA in Spirulina helps in
reducing insulin resistance. Spirulina is rich in Vitamin B-complex which has
its role in breaking down carbohydrates and lipids, thus improves metabolism of
glucose. So in the end it can be concluded that Spirulina is beneficial for
diabetes management.

Spirulina: Magic Wand for Allergic Rhinitis
Allergy is a hypersensitive response by our immune system against any
foreign material, which otherwise may be harmless to the body. Substances that
trigger allergic responses are termed as allergens. Technically, allergens can
be defined as antigens (foreign particles capable of stimulating
immune responses), often inhaled, touched or consumed orally (eaten), which is
perceived by our immune system as undesirable elements leading to allergic
reactions. Common allergens include dust
mites, pollens, peanuts, foods, certain medications and molds. Some of the
commonly known symptoms of allergic
reactions as cited by FDA are:
- Hives
- Flushed skin or rash
- Tingling or itchy sensation in the mouth
- Face, tongue, or lip swelling
- Vomiting and/or diarrhoea
- Abdominal cramps
- Coughing or wheezing
- Dizziness and/or lightheadedness
- Swelling of the throat and vocal cords
- Difficulty breathing
- Loss of consciousness
Allergic rhinitis is a condition of inflammation in nasal pathways. When
a person suffering from allergic rhinitis breathes in an allergen, body
releases chemicals such as histamine which leads to reactions aggravating the
symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Symptoms of allergic rhinitis are mentioned
below:
Some symptoms occur shortly after coming in contact with the allergic
substance. These are
·
Itchy nose, eyes
- Runny nose
- Teary eyes
- Sneezing
Symptoms
which develop later include:
- Nasal congestion and coughing
- Decrease in sense of smell
- Sore throat
- Dark circles under the eyes
- Headache, fatigue and irritability
- Pressure in ear
The best
way to overcome Allergic Rhinitis is by controlling the release of histamine
and also by reducing the level of cytokines. One of the many properties of Spirulina is that it reduces the level of cytokines in persons having allergic
rhinitis which indicates reduced auto immune response. It also inhibits the
release of histamines from mast cells which are responsible for various
allergic reactions. Therefore it is to be concluded that regular intake of
Spirulina can be helpful in controlling allergic rhinitis.
